Calvin Burney proudly graduated from Fayetteville State University in 1975. During his college years, he distinguished himself as an active member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., where he built lifelong friendships and promoted a strong sense of community. After completing his undergraduate degree, he pursued a master’s at the respected Georgia Institute of Technology.
Besides his impressive educational background, Calvin was a founding member of the FSUNCFAC, officially established on June 26, 2015. His dedication to education and community service showed in both his personal and professional life. He enjoyed a happy life with his wife, Betty Burney, and together they raised two wonderful sons, teaching them the values of hard work and integrity.
Calvin’s professional journey took a major turn in 1989 when he was appointed Chief of Transportation and Director of the Metropolitan Planning Organization for Jacksonville, Florida. His expertise in urban planning and transportation management enabled him to play a key role in shaping the city’s future. From 2011 to 2015, he served as Jacksonville’s Director of Planning, earning recognition as an unsung hero in the process.
Calvin skillfully navigated the often complex landscape of federal, state, and local development requirements, showing his commitment to community improvement. His key role in building the I-295 bypass highlighted his vision for better connectivity around Jacksonville, ultimately helping many residents.
Calvin Burney passed away on March 24, 2022, leaving a legacy of service, leadership, and a lasting impact on those who knew him and the city he helped develop.
